Entry #6. The World’s Smelliest Fruit.

Hi, welcome to my blog. I want to introduce to you one of my favorite fruits in the world: durian. Durian is popular in Southeast Asia, where it’s nicknamed “the king of fruits.” Durian is very high in nutrients, containing more than most other fruits. However, it also gets a bad rap due to its strong smell. Some people love the smell, while others hate it.

Durian is a tropical fruit; therefore, it’s grown a lot in Southeast Asia. In the United States, durian trees can be found in Florida. Durian trees fruit and flower in three to five years. It takes 3 to 5 months for the fruits to mature after the flower grows. Durian has a large size and spiky, hard outer shell. Inside the shell is another white layer that protects the tender flesh and durian seeds. The durian’s flesh can vary in color. It’s most commonly yellow or white, but can also be red or green. It has a sweet, custardy taste, with the texture of creamy cheesecake. Some fruits have a slightly bitter taste, together with some sweetness. You can eat the flesh on its own, paired with sticky rice, or as an ingredient in various dishes, such as smoothies, cake, ice cream.

Durian is famous for its strong odor when it's ripe. The durian’s smell has been compared to smelly gym clothes, rotting meat, or gasoline. Many people find the odor off-putting, and the fresh fruit has even been banned from some public places, mass transit, airports, and hotels in Singapore. Durian has a really short duration of tasty ripeness, about less than a week. Therefore, fresh durian is quite expensive in the US. People either hate it because of its stinky smell or love it because of its taste. It is nothing less than “hell on the outside and heaven on the inside.” If you have a chance, would you take a bite of the durian?
